In this seminar Professor Helen Herrman will discuss her experience in convening a taskforce for the World Psychiatric Association(WPA). The seminar (at Fitzroy) will be followed by a transcultural case study presented a Psychiatric Registrar from St Vincent’s Hospital. May 16 2012
The Deck of Dreams project – Opening Day
Being launched on 16th May 2012 (10:30am — 12:30pm at The O'Brien Centre cnr Victoria and Burton Streets, Darlinghurst, NSW), the Deck of Dreams Project is about gathering a collection of hopes and dreams from people who have been impacted by mental health issues.
Art Therapy and Depression workshop at Maitland
Karen Adler is a Transpersonal Art Therapist who is conducting an Art Therapy and Depression workshop at Maitland Regional Art Gallery on Saturday, May 12 2012. Depression often causes people to withdraw and become lost in their feelings, whereas art activities offer a means to release negative emotions, reconnect with yourself and reconnect with other people.
Grief and Mindfulness: the Zen way of turning suffering inside-out
The National Association for Loss & Grief (Vic) Inc conducted a workshop in Melbourne on 9 May 2012 to introduce participants to the Zen approach to loss and grief.
The workshop was designed for Counsellors, Nurses, Social Workers, Psychologists, Teachers, Emergency Services staff and others in a helping role.

Bipolar Disorder Seminar, South Yarra, May 1 2012
In this seminar Prof John Tiller presented bipolar disorder as a mental disorder which affects between 1% and 5% of the community.
ASIST Workshop — Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
ASIST is the most widely used suicide intervention model in the world. ASIST was run by registered LivingWorks trainers and uses internationally standardised learning materials. The workshop was to be held on Saturday 21 & Sunday 22nd April at 9.30am-5.30pm. It was a requirement to attend both full days.
Scholarships for Altering States Conference at Brisbane 7-8 June 2012
Queensland Alliance for Mental Health Inc has been awarded funding to provide scholarships for individuals to attend the 2012 Altering States Conference. Individuals eligible are: 1) Individuals with a lived experience of mental illness 2) Carers of individuals with a lived experience of mental illness 3) People who reside in a rural or remote locations within Australia who are currently working in the field of mental health.
Applications for scholarships closed on Friday 30 March 2012.

NALAG weekend workshops at Geelong: Non-finite loss and grief & and the Zen way
The NALAG (Vic) Rural Education Program will kick off with a weekend program of 2 workshops at the Geelong Conference Centre on Saturday 21st April and Sunday 22nd April 2012.
Both workshops have been run successfully in Melbourne a number of times and have been held in other regional centres. Both attract RCNA CNE points and NALAG OPD/CPD points.
safeTALK Workshop: Suicide Alertness for Everyone
The Anxiety Recovery Centre Victoria is conducting a workshop on 19 March 2012 at Surrey Hills, Victoria to make participants more aware and better prepared to deal with potential suicides.
Inquiry Into Workforce Participation by people with a mental illness.
The Family & Community Development Committee is calling for submissions to its current Inquiry into Workforce Participation by People with Mental Illness.
The Committee anticipates the timeframe for its tabling its report will be extended, in which case it will consider extending the submission closing date. Until this occurs, the submission closing date is 11 November 2011. Any extensions to the timelines and submission closing date will be publicised on the Committee website: www.parliament.vic.gov.au/fcdc/

Free ‘Beautiful Soul’ workshop
Saturday 22 October 2011 from 10.30am – 2pm at the Ulladulla Youth Centre
The Shoalhaven City Council will be hosting the free ‘Beautiful Soul’ workshop, addressing the issues of adolescent depression and suicide, at the Ulladulla Youth Centre on Saturday 22 October from 10.30am – 2pm. The workshop is sponsored by Shoalhaven City Council, the Shoalhaven City Council Youth Advisory Committee, Shoalhaven Suicide Prevention Awareness Network and Ulladulla Youth Centre.
It will feature a presentation from award winning motivational speaker and Vision in Mind CEO, Fay Jackson as well as youth acoustic performances, question and answer sessions and light refreshments. Ms Jackson will provide information on the benefits of mentoring and meditation as well as advice and links to a host of local support networks.
“The workshop is designed to help empower individuals to believe in themselves and take control of their situation. The workshop is free to residents of all ages. I would encourage anyone suffering from or wanting to learn more about depression to attend the workshop.”

Gold Coast Wellness Festival

General Practice Gold Coast (GPGC) is hosting a 'Wellness Festival' – a community event to celebrate Wellbeing on the Gold Coast during Mental Health Week.
Admission is free and there will be lots of free entertainment and activities including live performances, Rock Climbing. Jumping Castle, Farm Animals, Face Painting and more. There will also be food for purchase including a sausage sizzle and international food. Bring a rug and sit on the grass in front of the stage.

Mindfulness Introduction – Geelong Victoria
Wednesday 12th October 1.30pm – 3pm
There are numerous researched and anecdotal benefits of mindfulness practice. These range from more effectively dealing with physical and emotional pain; increasing self awareness, and managing anxiety and depression.
Psychologist Michael Anderson, who utilises mindfulness as a major part of his psychological work, will present an introduction to Mindfulness Practice.

The Sydney Mindfulness Seminar

Professor Russell Meares, Dr Bruno Cayoun and Dr Louise Hayes are each presenting on different aspects of Mindfulness, including Mindfulness-integrated CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy).
This seminar sounds like it will be of enormous benefit in improving our own mental health or to help others with depression and other mood disorders.
